not only excellent technique. From www.jazzitalia.net (March 2005) It is always pleasant to listen to a debut record. After many years I can still feel a spontaneous curiosity and a sort of immediate benevolence towards musicians, especially if they are very young and are taking an important step with their first recording. Sometimes the instinctive "positivity" can fade away a little, but the quality of contemporary jazz guarantees more and more often pleasant surprises. I listened to Andy Davies Quartet's first official CD and I must say I was impressed by the precision and fresh classicism of Davies, a first class English trumpet player who can offer good and various sonorities, renewing listening emotions. In a total mainstream area, but capable to offer modern high quality entries with precious extempore moments of pleasant and perhaps unexpected unpredictability, always introduced with elegant composure. When I say composure I do not mean a stiff performance, but a clean and "polite" one , offered with a great respect for what is being played. In my opinion this cultured, difficult and refined music, even if it is called jazz, has always been high music, like the classical one. The echoes of the "great Groove" are present just as the solid conscience of the past, but they are enriched with definitely modern times and methods, which make their expressiveness more vital and precious. Talent, extemporizing ability and musical sensitivity are required to play jazz and I think no other musical language/genre requires them at such a high level. Davies is a musician gifted with these essential elements and moreover fortified by his prepared "ensemble", up to the situation and precious ally to reach the poetic and meaningful goals of this project. He does not rely only on his first class technique but he draws from a deep sensitivity, which is always a precious and irreplaceable ally offering efficacious and vibrant communicative entries.
